God's righteous anger
"The LORD is a jealous and avenging God;
the LORD takes vengeance and is filled with wrath.
The LORD takes vengeance on his foes
and maintains his wrath against his enemies." Nahum 1:2 (NIV)
If we are unaccustomed to seeing God in this light, we may think that this is very turbulent, and uncontrolled aggression.
But God's fury is not like our unbridled, ungoverned temper, which is often lord over us.
But the actual translation is: that He is the 'master of fury'.
This anger is under His command and government.
"He prepared a path for his anger;
he did not spare them from death
but gave them over to the plague." Psalms 78:50 (NIV)
His anger was according to a prepared path, according to His purposes.
He always remains the righteous God.
He is always right, He is never is unjust.
"Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;
love and faithfulness go before you." Psalms 89:14 (NIV)
The people of Nineveh had once found God slow to anger, but when they refused to put Him first, they felt the full force of His anger.
Nineveh did not regard the destruction of it's army, and the fall of it's king as a warning from God.
So, because they persisted in their hostility towards God, then He continued His judgement upon Nineveh.
And this is foretold in the rest of Nahum.
But for those who trust in God, he says this:
"The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble.
He cares for those who trust in him,
but with an overwhelming flood he will make an end of [Nineveh];
he will pursue his foes into darkness." Nahum 1:7-
For everyone who trusts in the Lord Jesus Christ do not worry!
The Lord is good to you.
There may be an overwhelming flood around you, but Jesus is your refuge in these times of trouble.
Trust in God, for He cares for you!
