(Second half of Psalm 2)
".......The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them.
Then he rebukes them in his anger
and terrifies them in his wrath,
saying, “I have installed my King
on Zion, my holy hill.”
I will proclaim the decree of the LORD: He said to me, “You are my Son;
today I have become your Father.
Ask of me, and I will make
the nations your inheritance,
the ends of the earth your possession. You will rule them with an iron sceptre; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.” Therefore, you kings,
be wise; be warned,
you rulers of the earth.
Serve the LORD with fear
and rejoice with trembling.
Kiss the Son, lest he be angry
and you be destroyed in your way,
for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.”
Jesus the King Part 3
(All of Psalm 2 is applicable to King Jesus).
Although the Lord scoffs at those who rage against Him, He will not ignore them, because their sin provokes Him.
No one can expect that God will be reconciled to them, or will be pleased with them, unless they approach Him through Jesus Christ.
Therefore, if they reject Christ, then they sin against their only hope of a remedy, and they lose Him as their Mediator.
Verse 5 “Then He rebukes them in His anger,
and terrifies them in His wrath,
saying ‘I have installed My King on Zion, My Holy hill.’”
God speaks and it is done.
He speaks in anger and the wicked are undone.
Despite all the forces of wickedness having been concentrated on Jesus they were powerless to stop Him being set upon Zion as King.
It must be a frustrating puzzle for the wicked, not to be able to snuff Christianity out.
Such a vulnerable group of people to look at from the outside.
Look at how hard the forces of evil worked, leading up to the reformation in this
country.
Numerous believers were burned at the stake, along with English Bibles and any Christian books and leaflets, that would shed light on the Christian faith.
To many it would seem that Christianity was going to be totally eradicated.
Instead, God caused revival to spring up.
Verse 9 this is God the Father speaking to Christ:-
“You will rule them with an iron sceptre,
You will dash them to pieces like pottery.”
Think how easily an old clay pot, is totally smashed with a hammer.
It is an easy thing for Him to destroy His enemies.
In Revelation it says about Jesus the King:
“I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse,
whose rider is called Faithful and True.
With justice He judges and makes war.
His eyes are like blazing fire, and on His head are many crowns.
He has a Name written on Him that no-
He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and His Name is the Word of God.
The armies of heaven were following Him,
riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean.
Out of His mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations.
He will rule them with an iron sceptre.
He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty.
On His robe and on His thigh He has this Name written:
‘King of kings and Lord of lords.” (Revelation 19:11)
What an awesome picture!
How dreadful to be an enemy of King Jesus!
But the Bible also tells us how merciful He is, and how patient, in allowing time for people to repent, and to turn from their wicked ways.
They ought to come to Him in humility, seeing Him as their only hope of forgiveness.
Even for Christ’s enemies, there is a way of forgiveness.
But will the proud hearts be willing to bend their knees in submission to King Jesus in this life?
Or will they be forced to do it at His Judgement Throne, when it is too late?
Paul writing to the Philippians said:-
“Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place,
and gave Him the Name that is above every name.
That at the Name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth,
and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.”
Psalm 2:11 “Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and you be destroyed in your way,
for His wrath can flare up in a moment.
Blessed are all who take refuge in Him.”
