Basic Strands
Both attainment targets will be approached through programmes of study relating to the following basic strands:

PEOPLE (PE)
FESTIVALS AND FASTS (FF)
WORSHIP (WO)
RITES OF PASSAGE (RP)
PLACES (PL)
SELF AND COMMUNITY (SC)
WRITINGS (WR)
THE NATURAL WORLD (NW)
How these basic strands are woven together is for the school to determine."

"Schools need to produce their own schemes of work to ensure that the statutory material in its eight basic strands is covered in a way appropriate to their own pupils.
In their interpretation of the syllabus, schools are free to take advantage of the many opportunities for flexibility that it provides.
These opportunities occur in relation to balance, coverage and methods...

• In Key Stages 1 to 3, the programmes of study are set out by religion, and material is defined in Basic Strands.
• The strands are closely inter-related at each stage. They are not meant to impose discrete areas of learning nor to constrain planning.
• Any unit of work may well contain some elements that draw on more than one strand and/or religion."
