Attainment Targets
"AT1 UNDERSTANDING RELIGION 3
Pupils should acquire knowledge about and understanding of religions, particularly as expressed in Christianity and other principal religions represented in Great Britain.

AT2 INTERPRETING EXPERIENCE 3
Pupils should develop the ability to explore, reflect on and respond to human experience, drawing on their study of religion.

Balance of attainment targets:

• It is important to ensure a balance between the two attainment targets.

• As they learn about Christianity and the other major religions, pupils should be encouraged to reflect, to respond and to relate their learning to their own ideas and
experiences. The pages of questions in the programmes of study are designed to help teachers develop the reflective dimension.

• The optional AT2 questions in the programmes of study may be used above or below the key stage suggested according to the ability of the pupils. Many of the questions can draw responses at a complex or a more basic level.

Coverage:

• Within the programmes of study of particular religions, teachers need to choose which learning objectives are to be covered in detail and which will be addressed more concisely. The verbs used in the programmes of study give some indication as to how this may be done. For instance, `Understand how ...' suggests a deeper level of learning than `Begin to be aware of ...'

• Content in italics is illustrative and need not all be included.

• Programmes of study are the means by which pupils gain knowledge and develop understanding and skills in religious education. The acquisition of factual information is not the sole purpose of RE."
