Are the Gospels fabricated?

How can we know that the writers of the Gospels didn't exaggerate and make things up about Jesus Christ?

Three of the Gospels were written over a period 10 to 40 years after Jesus' death. (John, a disciple of Jesus, wrote his Gospel later than that).

There were many eye witnesses to what Jesus Christ did

Thousands of people had heard Jesus' teaching, and had seen the miracles. If these things hadn't have been true, the whole of the Christian teaching would have gone down like a lead balloon.

Imagine someone writing a book in 1970 about Winston Churchill in the Second World War. He was still well known in 1970, and there were a lot of witnesses who had seen and heard him.

But if this book claimed that Winston Churchill had performed signs and miracles, it would have had no weight, no credibility and no-one would have taken any notice of it.

The things that were written in the Gospels were too well known to fabricate.

If it was made up, or exaggerated, then people would have known that it wasn't the truth.

But it was the truth, people knew that, and they were willing to die for that Truth.

Even Christ's enemies couldn't deny His miracles, so they said:

"It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons." Matthew 9:34 NIV

Or on another occasion His enemies said (again they couldn't deny the things that Jesus was doing):-

"By what authority are you doing these things?" they asked. "And who gave you authority to do this?"

Jesus replied, "I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things.

John's baptism--was it from heaven, or from men? Tell me!"

They discussed it among themselves and said, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask, 'Then why didn't you believe him?'

But if we say, 'From men'...." (They feared the people, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.)

So they answered Jesus, "We don't know."

Jesus said, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things."

What a good answer!

So what has been written in the Gospels and the rest of the New Testament is reliable, and trustworthy, (as is the whole of the Bible).

The Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy saying:

"....from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
