Who really knows the me within each one of us?
Ahab, narrator, Jezebel, Prophet, Elijah,
ACT 1 [AHAB & JEZEBEL SITTING ON THRONES. PROPHET STANDING NEAR]
AHAB: [PLEASED WITH YOURSELF]
NARRATOR: King Ahab of Israel was a nasty piece of work. And Queen Jezebel was even worse, with her ruthless temper.
JEZEBEL: [SNARL]
AHAB: I almost get a touch of guilt when I think about our country’s history and how God, the Lord, led our forefathers and spoke to them.
JEZEBEL: [SNORT] Surely you don’t believe those fairytales?!!!
PROPHET: Your gods are now: [EMPHASIZE] ‘THE Masters’.
AHAB: Well I know it’s not fashionable now to worship the unnecessary Lord God, but just for the sake of history, I feel we ought to make a token gesture sometimes, you know.
JEZEBEL: Out of the question! ‘The Lord God’ [PAUSE & SHIVER] O how I hate to say that name,
is pointless. We, and our country now serve ‘The Masters’.
PROPHET: Yes, the ‘The Masters’, are much more in keeping with how our nation has developed.
NARRATOR: At that point someone made their way towards the king. His name was Elijah, a prophet of the Lord God. The king had a dislike of Elijah because he would appear and give the most annoying messages from the Lord God and that would tend to give him indigestion for the rest of the day!
But Queen Jezebel hated and despised Elijah, because he never had a good word to say about ‘The Master’ gods.
ELIJAH: [ENTER STAGE NOD BEFORE THE KING] Your majesty.
JEZEBEL: [STAND UP IN ANGER] Get that man Elijah out of here!
PROPHET: We don’t want to hear what he has to say!
AHAB: Well, we can always show him a bit of good manners, even if we don’t do what he says.
JEZEBEL: [ANGRY] It’s nothing to do with good manners! He speaks only bad things – kill him!
ELIJAH: I never bring you my own messages, only those from the Lord God, because he is the God
I serve and worship.
PROPHET: [SNORT] How self-
ELIJAH: God’s message to you is this: There won’t be any rain in this country until the Lord tells me to say otherwise. There won’t even be any dew at night. No rain, no dew! [EXIT STAGE]
JEZEBEL: [ANGRY] What! Kill him! Kill him!
PROPHET: What a stupid thing to say! He is so full of himself!
AHAB: [GROAN & RUB STOMACH IN BIG CIRCLES] Arrh, my indigestion is coming on again!
JEZEBEL: Is that all you can think about your stomach!
PROPHET: It will never happen.
AHAB: [GROAN & RUB STOMACH]: It’s already happening.
PROPHET: No, not your indigestion! Elijah can’t stop it from raining. He’s a fool!
NARRATOR: As soon as Elijah had left the palace, God told him to head eastward and hide in a narrow valley. Nobody knew where he was. The weather turned very hot and dry. Day after day, month after month, there was no rain.
A year passed, and the sun continued to beat down on everyone and everything.
The rivers started to run dry and water was becoming difficult to find. The king sent out many of his officials to search for Elijah throughout the land and the countries around them.
Elijah was still in the narrow valley with a small spring of water nearby. God made sure that Elijah had enough food and water. Even ravens used to bring him things to eat.
Then the little stream dried up, so God told Elijah to go to a northern country on the Mediterranean coast.
ACT 2 [OUTSIDE IN THE DRIED UP COUNTRY]
NARRATOR: In the 3rd year without any rain, God said to Elijah: “Go and present yourself to king Ahab and I will send rain upon the land.”
[AHAB, JEZEBEL, & PROPHET ON STAGE STANDING]
PROPHET: It’s pointless looking for Elijah. Just because we have had 3 years without rain doesn’t mean that he had anything to do with it.
JEZEBEL: Yes it’s entirely a fluke. Pure luck that he said that and then there was no rain.
AHAB: I know he just said that to get attention, but I think it was more than just luck.
JEZEBEL: I can’t stand those people who believe in the Lord God, which is why I have killed all that I know of. I’m returning to the palace. [EXIT STAGE]
PROPHET: And when Elijah shows up, we can kill him too! I’m going back to the palace as well, I’m fed up looking for Elijah! [EXIT STAGE]
AHAB: [CALL OUT] Well Elijah is not our first problem. We need to find some water and grass for all of our horses and donkeys, otherwise they will die. So I’ll search the eastern side and Obadiah can search the western side. [EXIT STAGE]
NARRATOR: Obadiah was in charge of the whole palace but he was secretly a believer in the Lord. When Jezebel started killing all the believers, he hid 100 in two caves and his servants supplied them with food and water.
So king Ahab went in one direction and Obadiah in the other.
ELIJAH: [ENTER STAGE]
NARRATOR: Obadiah then found Elijah and he said: “Elijah! Is that really you?”
ELIJAH: Yes, it is me. Go and tell your king, that I am here.
NARRATOR: Obadiah was scared that Elijah would go off and hide again and that king Ahab would be angry, so he said: “Elijah, what have I done wrong that you put me into a situation where I will almost certainly be killed. I have done nothing wrong and I have worshipped the Lord since I was a youngster. Don’t you know that I have hidden 100 believers in caves to protect them from Queen Jezebel.
ELIJAH: As the Lord truly lives, I will meet king Ahab today.
NARRATOR: Obadiah agreed to tell king Ahab and he left Elijah there.
AHAB: [ENTER STAGE] Is that you Elijah? You are nothing but trouble to this country! All you bring is grief and problems!
ELIJAH: It is not me who brings trouble to this nation, [PAUSE] you have! You and your whole family!
You have deserted the Lord God and have worshipped ‘The Master’ gods. Listen to me now, go and get as many people as you can to meet me at Mount Carmel.
I especially want all the prophets of ‘The Masters’ to be there. [EXIT STAGE]
AHAB: [SPLUTTER] What! How dare he tell me what to do! I am the king! [SCRATCH CHIN] But I had better do it, otherwise it may never rain again! [EXIT STAGE]
ACT 3 [MOUNT CARMEL]
[AHAB, ELIJAH, & PROPHET ON STAGE STANDING]
NARRATOR: Thousands of people flocked to Mount Carmel. There was a lot of talk about it going to be a showdown between the one prophet of the Lord and the 450 prophets of ‘The Masters’.
What was going to happen? Many said that Elijah had stopped it raining for 3 years so what may he do now? While others were saying it was a freak of nature and the prophets of
‘The Masters’ would be able to pull something out of the bag!
ELIJAH: How long will you hesitate and waver on choosing who your god is? If the Lord is God, then follow him! If ‘The Masters’ are your gods, then follow them! But why do you dither on your decision? Make up your mind and choose your God! Who will you follow?
NARRATOR: But the thousands of people kept quiet. You could have heard a pin drop!
ELIJAH: I am the only prophet of the Lord, whereas ‘The Masters’ have got 450 of their prophets.
We have got two bulls here that we are going to sacrifice. The two sides will put their offering on a bonfire of wood but none of us will light the fire.
The prophets of ‘The Masters’ will then call upon their gods to send fire upon their offering.
And I will call upon the Lord. [PAUSE] The god who answers by fire is the real God!
NARRATOR: The people thought that was a great idea and they all settled themselves down on the ground to watch the outcome.
ELIJAH: [POINT AT THE PROPHET] You start, then you can choose which bull, and you can choose the wood, then you won’t be able to say that it was all fixed.
PROPHET: [LOOK NERVOUS. RUB HANDS TOGETHER] Well OK. Erm, I don’t think that this has been done before, but we are willing to give it a go. [CHEERS UP] Aren’t we?!!!
OK, while the bull is being sacrificed over there, [POINT] erm, we’ll choose this [POINT] heap of wood. [EXIT STAGE]
AHAB: [FEELING THE WOOD] Argh yes. This wood is tinder dry. It will burn really well. It’s a shame that Queen Jezebel couldn’t be here to witness this remarkable event.
PROPHET: [ENTER STAGE CARRYING THE SACRIFICE] Here’s the sacrifice, I’ll put it on the top here.
OK, all you prophets we need you to walk around the sacrifice and we’ll call upon ‘The Masters’ to send fire upon this dry wood. [SLOWLY WALK AROUND THE WOOD]
We call out to you ‘The Masters’ to send down fire!
NARRATOR: The prophets called out from the early morning till midday.
PROPHET: [CONTINUE SLOWLY WALKING, RAISING ARMS & THEN BOWING LOW] We call to you ‘The Masters’ answer us! Hear our cry!
ELIJAH: [SARCASTICALLY] I think you need to shout louder! Surely you are calling out to real gods!
Perhaps they are busy doing something! Oh no, perhaps they are visiting another country at this moment and you need them here, opps that might be a bit tricky for you!
PROPHET: [WALK FASTER, RAISING ARMS & BOWING. SHOUT] Come on, we need to make more noise, shout louder everyone!
ELIJAH: [SARCASTICALLY] I can only think that they are asleep or perhaps going to the toilet! [PAUSE] Yeah, I reckon they’ve gone to sleep, you need to wake them up!
NARRATOR: The prophets continued to call out and they were cutting their bodies with sharp instruments, but the gods did not respond, no one answered and no one paid any attention.
It was now late afternoon and the thousands of people were now asleep or they had moved a little further away from all the noise.
PROPHET: [WALK FASTER, SLAPPING BODY] Come on answer us! Answer us!
ELIJAH: [HOLD HAND UP TO PROPHET] OK, that’s enough. [TURN TO THE PEOPLE AND BECKON THEM] Everyone, come closer to me. [THEN DO WHAT THE NARRATOR SAYS]
NARRATOR: Everyone, all the thousands of people who had got pretty fed up with waiting, came towards Elijah. The whole crowd had become energised and were expecting something to happen. Elijah picked up 12 large rocks, to represent the 12 tribes of Israel, and he made an altar. He then dug out a trench around the altar and laid the wood on top of that, followed by the offering.
ELIJAH: Go and fill 4 large storage jars of water and pour it on the offering.
AHAB: What! Where is there water around here?
NARRATOR: Four volunteers stepped forward and they went off to get the water and then returned and poured it over the offering.
ELIJAH: Get more than that, the same again!
PROPHET: There’s hardly any water in the country and you want to waste it like this!
NARRATOR: The four volunteers did it again, pouring the water over the wood.
ELIJAH: Do it again for the third time!
AHAB: [GRUMPY] What a waste of water!
NARRATOR: The four volunteers poured the water over the offering, so that even the ditch around it was full of water. Then Elijah prayed out loud, lifting his voice to heaven.
ELIJAH: O Lord God of our forefathers, let it be known today that you are the real, living God. Show everyone that I have done this only because you have told me to do it.
Answer me, O Lord, so that these people will know that you are God and that you are turning their hearts back to you right now! [QUICKLY STEP BACK FROM THE FIRE]
NARRATOR: Then the fire of the Lord fell and burnt up the offering, all of the wood, and the rocks.
At this the people threw themselves flat onto the floor and they cried out: “The Lord, He is God!
The Lord he is God!”
AHAB: Amazing!
PROPHET: [FEARFUL] I’m getting out of here! [EXIT STAGE]
ELIJAH: Don’t let the prophets of ‘The Masters’ escape. They have killed many believers, now it is their turn. [TURN TO AHAB] Go! You can now eat and drink knowing that heavy rain is on its way.
AHAB: Surely not, there is not a single cloud in the sky. How can you know such a thing?
ELIJAH: [POINT AT THE SMOULDERING REMAINS]
AHAB: Yeah, OK, I believe you! [EXIT STAGE]
NARRATOR: King Ahab returned to the palace and to queen Jezebel.
JEZEBEL: [AT THE BACK OF HALL]
AHAB: [WALK UP TO JEZEBEL] You won’t believe what I have just seen!
JEZEBEL: [ANGRY] I have heard that all the prophets of ‘The Masters’ are dead.
AHAB: Yes, but you should have seen the fire come down from heaven....
JEZEBEL: [ANGRY] All 450 prophets are dead. What will ‘The Masters’ do?
AHAB: Well, they did absolutely nothing and that is the whole point!
JEZEBEL: [ANGRY] No! The whole point is that the prophets have died and Elijah has caused this to happen.
AHAB: Well, the fire did fall upon Elijah’s offering.
JEZEBEL: Have you now been taken in by this creep, Elijah? Well, I’m not taken in by him! I am going to make sure that he is dead by the end of tomorrow! [STORM OFF BEHIND STAGE]
AHAB: Hmmm. Well thinking about it, she is probably right. [WALK BEHIND STAGE]
ACT 4 [OUTSIDE IN THE DRIED UP COUNTRY -
ELIJAH: [SITTING ON GROUND] Oh no Lord, Queen Jezebel is going to kill me! [DEPRESSED]
I’ve had enough! [PAUSE] I cannot run from her! [PAUSE] Her anger is terrifying, she will not stop at anything. She will track me down! I’m so tired, too tired to go on! [LAY DOWN & GO TO SLEEP]
NARRATOR: Then an angel of the Lord woke Elijah and told him to eat the cake that was baking on the coals near to him.
ELIJAH: [SLEEPY] Cake? What cake? I didn’t bake a cake. Oh, a cake with a jug of water! [EAT & DRINK] This is good, mmm all gone! [LAY DOWN & GO TO SLEEP]
NARRATOR: Then the angel of the Lord woke Elijah again and told him that there was more to eat, because his journey had taken a lot out of him.
ELIJAH: [SLEEPY] More cake and water! [EAT & DRINK] This is very good!
NARRATOR: Strengthened by the food and drink he walked hundreds of miles out into the desert and he came to a cave. Then the Lord said to him: “What are you doing here Elijah?”
ELIJAH: [LOOK DEPRESSED AND SIT ON THE FLOOR] I have been very outspoken for you Lord, and I have put myself in dangerous places, but everyone else only thinks about themselves and they have all turned their backs on you.
I am the only one doing what you want and now they are trying to kill me as well!
NARRATOR: Then the Lord said: “Come out of the cave, for I am about to pass through this valley and you will be able to see me clothed in power and majesty and glory!”
But Elijah didn’t move. He could hear the sound of a huge gale blowing past the cave entrance, but the Lord wasn’t in that storm.
Then the cave started to tremble and rocks started to fall from the sides of the cave – it was an earthquake! But Elijah didn’t move, and the Lord wasn’t in the earthquake.
Suddenly there was the roaring sound of a massive fire outside the cave entrance.
But Elijah didn’t move, and the Lord wasn’t in the firestorm.
Everything went very quiet and Elijah continued sitting on the ground.
Then a voice whispered: “Elijah!”
ELIJAH: [GET UP VERY RELUCTANTLY AND SLOWLY MOVE TO CAVE ENTRANCE]
NARRATOR: The Lord then said: “Elijah, what are you doing here?”
ELIJAH: I have been very outspoken for you Lord, and I have put myself in dangerous places, but everyone else only thinks about themselves and they have all turned their backs on you.
I am the only one doing what you want and now they are trying to kill me as well!
NARRATOR: The Lord then said: “Elijah, go back to where you fled from and I have got some things I want you to do. I need you to anoint a new king over Israel, a new king over a nearby country and anoint a new prophet, Elisha, who will follow in your footsteps. As to you getting depressed and thinking that you are the only person who follows me, I have seven thousand people in Israel who follow me.”
Elijah was encouraged by all of this and he shook off his depressing thoughts and he obeyed the Lord with a happy heart.
As for king Ahab and queen Jezebel, their days were numbered because they continued in the same old ways.
THE END
