Vermuyden - the road off of Cook's Drove, Earith ...

Vermuyden seems a strange name for a road.
Where does the name come from?

It's the name of a Dutch engineer Cornelius Vermuyden who lived 1595 to 1683.

The river next to Earith, known as the New Bedford river or 100ft river was his handywork which helped to drain 40,000 acres by 1652.

Prior to this, the English Civil War hampered the drainage work and in 1642 Parliment ordered that the land should be flooded to stop the King's army from advancing.

Between the two parallel rivers (the Old Bedford River and the New Bedford River) next to Earith is the raised site of a fort known as the Earith Bulwark which was built during the English Civil War.
